The acronym CAFE stands for C-comprehension, A-accuracy, F-fluency and E-expanded vocabulary. I will be using this framework in my classroom this school year. I would love to hear some lesson ideas for any of these sections. Thank you!!! Click on the Edit button on the top right hand side of the page. Please make sure to include your name after your addition.
Comprehension: I understand what I read making connections (text to self, text, world)-
blog about connections
use graphic organizers,
make a connections chain out of paper,
create a PSA about a topic related to the connection.
Check for Understanding;
Use the check for understanding checkmark (who, what happened, what, when, where, why, how)
Read to a partner and check their understanding when they are finished with their part of the reading using the checkmark.
Summarize:
Read a short story into a flip video camera and summarize the book using the retelling rope
blog a summary
create a flip book
create a digital story summarizing your book
book report in a bag using props to retell your story
Make Inferences: Use what you know (background knowledge) + the clues from the story
Into the book online lesson
Starmattica online lesson
Graphic organizers
Animal inference game
Inference cards
Synthesize: Put all of the comprehension strategies together and create a new thought (deeper understanding)
Create a mosaic picture after reading by cutting apart squares, drawing a picture of connection, main idea, inference, thought. Put the pieces back together to create the pre-drawn outline of the person. Laminate and write your synthesis in the blank face.
Accuracy: I can read with few or no mistakes. Decoding strategies:
sound it out using your phonics skills
look for word chunks
read around the word
take off the prefix/suffix and read the base word
use context clues
look at the first letter of the word, what words would make sense in the sentence? (guess the covered word)
flip the sound (try the long vowel sound in place of the short vowel sound)
Dissect the word
Thumb crash the word
look it up in a dictionary or use the internet
ask for help
Fluency: I can read smoothly with expression.
Read Naturally
Read into the flip video camera- students then watch the video then read the story again
Students re-read the page/paragraph if decoding two words or more
character voice
Work with punctuation such as commas, periods, quotation marks
Expanded Vocabulary: I can learn new words in the text and use them in my speaking/writing
Use context clues
read around the new word
look up the word meaning and use it in speaking
write the new word in your personal dictionary
use the new vocabulary word when writing
You have so many great ideas that you didn't leave much to be added!) One thought I had was related to the speech program we have at our school. The favorite category always seem to be improv. I wonder if you could have a group do an improv in front of the room that has a list of things that should be accomplished and have a group view them and make a list of the things they saw. This way you can check both the improv group and the viewing group. I hoe that hlps, because again, your list is stellar!
You have a great plan for implementation this fall! The only other thing I can think of for fluency would be to use GarageBand to have a student record a passage, then have them reread the same passage twice and play back to them the difference. When they hear their own voice and how much better they did the 3rd time, it gives a sense of motivation and a realization that sometimes they just make silly mistakes. Great information!-Amy Bunting
